Inside the Story: What Inspired “Another Yard”?

Summary of the Book

Another Yard is a playful and exaggerated account of Wayne Stewart’s experiences growing up while cutting lawns during the summer. Though rooted in real-life events, the story blurs the lines between fact and fiction intentionally leaving the reader guessing about what’s true. At its core, the book follows a boy as he learns about Mother Nature, grows up with innocent curiosity, and begins to uncover the secrets hidden from him by a strict family.

What Inspired It

The idea for Another Yard was sparked by an online writing platform that allowed users to share and publish their stories. Disappointed by the lack of structure and narrative quality in many submissions most resembling casual advice columns or confessions. Wayne set out to create an example of a true storybook format. Originally intended as a demonstration, it soon evolved into something more personal.

With only his own childhood experiences to draw from, Wayne decided to craft a humorous tale around an incredibly naive character – one so innocent that the character’s ignorance became a source of comic relief. Blending reality with fantasy, he created a story that was both entertaining and illustrative of a more refined storytelling format.

Themes and Challenges

One of the major challenges in writing Another Yard was knowing when to stop. The story had the potential to go on endlessly, but finding the right place to end it was a careful and difficult decision.
